SIZING

Proper sizing of a bathroom fan is crucial. Undersized fans are inadequate, while oversized fans exhaust too much conditioned air.

The key to bathroom ventilation is proper sizing. As per HVI, the American Heating Ventilation Institute the rule of thumb is approximately is 8-10 air changes per hour, which equates to approximately 1 CFM (cubic foot per minute).

For example, a bathroom of 80 square feet with a standard 8 foot ceiling would require an 80 CFM fan. The math is 80 square feet x8 air changes per hour, equals 5120 cubic feet exhaust. An 80 CFM fan running 60 minutes (1 hour) would exhaust 4800 cubic feet. For more info on sizing view HVI.ca.
